Know Your Risk: Preventing Cervical Cancer Early

It is one of the most preventable cancers, yet about 300 women are diagnosed each year in Singapore. Understanding your risk factors is the first step to protecting yourself.

RISK FACTORS FOR CERVICAL CANCER

You may be at higher risk if you:

  • Started having sexual intercourse before the age of 20
  • Are infected with Human Papillomavirus (HPV)
  • Have multiple sexual partners, or have a partner who has had many partners
  • Smoke tobacco (Women who smoke are twice as likely to get cervical cancers)
  • Have given birth three times or more
  • Have been using oral contraceptives for five years or more
  • Have weakened immune systems
  • Have undergone solid organ transplant
  • Have a family history of cervical cancer

WHAT ARE SOME SYMPTOMS TO WATCH OUT FOR?

In early stages, when it is most preventable, there are no symptoms. As the cancer progresses, the symptoms include:

  • Bleeding following sexual intercourse, in between periods, or after menopause
  • Water, bloody vaginal discharge that may be heavy and have a foul smell
  • Pain during intercourse

HOW TO PROTECT YOURSELF

  • Screen regularly for cervical cancer
  • Be vaccinated for HPV
  • Do not smoke
  • Have fewer sexual partners
  • Practise safe sex

SURVIVAL STATISTICS FOR CERVICAL CANCER

In Singapore, cervical cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths for women aged 15 to 44. While treatment is almost 100% effective when caught early, the five-year survival rate for cervical cancer is 64.3% locally.
