‘I Am And I Will’
This year, World Cancer Day kicks off a campaign revolving around the theme “I Am And I Will”, which challenges everyone to make a personal commitment to take action against cancer.
Whether you are a cancer survivor, a caregiver, a friend, a co-worker, or a healthcare professional, you can play a part in the battle against cancer.
Every year, 9.6 million people die from cancer. It is the world’s second-most deadly disease.
Yet, at least one third of common cancers can be prevented, if efforts are made to reduce the risk of getting the disease. And an estimated 3.7 million deaths can be prevented, if the right steps are taken to spot the disease early so that effective treatment can be given.
How can each of us play a part? We can start by raising our own awareness and understanding of cancer – by getting accurate information about the disease, learning how to spot the early warning signs, and distinguishing between facts and misconceptions.
We can reduce the risk of cancer by making changes to our diet and lifestyle. And we can reduce its impact by going for regular screenings and performing self-examinations.
