Cancer can affect sexuality and intimacy, yet these concerns are often unspoken. Here are eight ways to reconnect with your partner.

What are “sexuality” and “intimacy”?

Sexuality is related to sex and physical closeness, including attitudes, thoughts, desires, and behaviours. Intimacy is the feeling of emotional closeness and connection with another person.

HOW DOES CANCER AFFECT SEXUALITY AND INTIMACY?

  • Diminished sexual drive due to treatment side effects such as fatigue, pain, hair loss, and nausea
  • Shifting roles from lovers to caregivers, making it hard to maintain a sexual connection
  • Perception that sexual activity is inappropriate or difficult during treatment

WAYS TO RECONNECT WITH YOUR PARTNER

  1. Normalise the difficulties
  2. Accepting that sexual challenges can be part of the cancer journey can ease isolation and encourage couples to seek support.

  3. Accept negative emotions
  4. Recognising negative feelings as valid provides space for the loss brought by cancer and helps you see ways to adjust to new realities.

  5. Manage difficult thoughts and emotions
  6. Consider journaling, counselling, or participating in restorative activities such as yoga to help manage difficult thoughts and emotions.

  7. Keep a flexible mindset
  8. Intimacy is not limited to coital sex. Explore together other forms of intimacy such as cuddling.

  9. Support your body image
  10. Improve self-confidence and overall well-being through taking control and exploring ways to look and feel good.

  11. Communicate openly
  12. Open communication is key to navigating sexual concerns and finding new ways to connect intimately.

  13. Speak to healthcare professionals
  14. Discuss your sexual issues with your healthcare team to identify coping strategies.

  15. Adopt a sex-positive attitude
  16. Recognise sex as a natural and healthy part of life. A positive mindset towards sex and intimacy can help couples experience the benefits of intimacy
