PCC at 20: Reflecting on our values and journey

Twenty years on, we look back on the shared vision that built the centre — and the patient-first care that continues to guide it.
Back in 2006, cancer care in Singapore was still relatively fragmented. Patients often found themselves moving from one specialist to another, trying to make sense of their diagnosis while navigating an already overwhelming journey.
This experience shaped the vision of PCC’s four founding doctors: Dr Ang Peng Tiam, Dr Khoo Kei Siong, Dr Teo Cheng Peng, and Dr Lim Hong Liang. They shared a common goal of creating a one-stop centre where patients could receive coordinated, multidisciplinary care tailored to each individual.
While they did not have everything figured out at the start, they were guided by a simple belief: to care for every patient as they would their own family.
As PCC celebrates its 20th anniversary this year, our doctors reflect on the values of Trust, Care, and Hope that lie at the heart of our patient care.
“WE SHALL CONTINUE TO SEE EVEN BETTER OUTCOMES IN THE YEARS AHEAD.
One of PCC’s strengths has been our ability to bring in younger oncologists who are key opinion leaders in their fields. They bring fresh perspectives, deep expertise, and new energy to complement the experience of our existing team.
Over the years, all our doctors have remained committed to staying at the forefront of cancer care, whether through attending international oncology conferences, following closely the most recent oncology publications, or participating in regular tumour boards and joint conferences.
The last two decades have seen major advances incancer treatment, leading to higher cure rates, enhanced disease control, and improved quality of life. With ongoing research, I am confident that we shall continue to see even better outcomes in the years ahead.”
Dr Ang Peng Tiam, Medical Director
“TRUST BUILDS WHEN PATIENTS KNOW THEIR DOCTOR HAS THEIR BEST INTERESTS AT HEART.
I believe trust develops when patients feel that their doctor is not only competent, but also has their best interests at heart, and cares for their well-being. It begins when they feel heard and when their concerns are taken seriously.
Trust continues to build as we take time to explain things clearly and honestly, and walk with them through uncertainties and difficult decisions.”
Dr Khoo Kei Siong, Deputy Medical Director
“HOPE MAKES A HUGE DIFFERENCE IN TREATMENT OUTCOME.
Hope is a very important tool in our fight against cancers. Hope helps to motivate our patients. It energises them and fires up their fighting spirit.
I have personal experiences where hope had really made a huge difference in the outcome of cancer treatment. At the same time, hope must be grounded in honesty. Our responsibility is to give patients realistic hope, never false hope.
When hope is paired with trust, and care, it can become a powerful part of the healing journey.”
Dr Teo Cheng Peng, Senior Consultant, Haematology
“CARE IS ABOUT WALKING WITH THE PATIENT.
Care is not just about treatment plans and chemotherapy. It is about walking with the patient from diagnosis, through treatment, and beyond. Over the years, I have had patients return to see me long after their treatment has ended, with their families, spouses, children, and even newborn babies.
That is when we know we did not just treat cancer, we have touched lives. This has always been our approach at PCC, and we continue to put our patients first.”
