Meet Dr Grace Kusumawidjaja, the latest addition to parkway cancer centre’s radiation oncology team. She brings a heartfelt approach to her practice, deeply valuing the bonds formed with patients and their families on their journey to healing.

What inspired you to specialise in radiation oncology?

Being a radiation oncologist allows me to forge meaningful connections with my patients and their families, guiding them through their cancer journey, and developing long-term relationships with them. Radiation oncology is also at the forefront of medical innovation, continuously evolving with advancements in technology and treatment techniques, leveraging state-of-the-art tools to deliver precise, targeted treatment, while minimising side effects and preserving quality of life. Radiation oncology is a field where compassion for patients marries technology and innovation to make a meaningful difference in the fight against cancer.

Joining Parkway Cancer Centre (PCC) marks a new chapter in your career. What aspirations do you have for your tenure here?

I am thrilled to join the PCC group and will remain committed to providing excellent patient care, ensuring that each patient receives treatment tailored to their unique needs. Working closely with my new colleagues across disciplines, I also hope to deliver integrated, multidisciplinary care to our patients, addressing their oncological care, as well as their psychological and supportive care needs.

What is your philosophy when it comes to patient communication and involvement in their treatment plans?

My philosophy is rooted in empathy, transparency and partnership. By prioritising clear, accessible communication, shared decision-making, patient education and ongoing support, patients are equipped with the knowledge and tools they need to navigate their cancer journey, to play an active role in their care, and achieve the best possible outcomes.

What do you consider the most rewarding aspect of forming long-term relationships with your patients and their families?

Building long-term relationships fosters trust and connection between patients, their families and me as their oncologist. When patients feel comfortable and supported, they are more likely to openly share their concerns, ask questions and actively participate in their care, leading to better treatment adherence and outcomes. In addition, witnessing patients’ milestones and achievements over time — for example, completing a course of treatment or achieving remission — is incredibly gratifying.

For someone just beginning their journey with cancer, what message of hope can you give to them and their families?

It is important to remember that you are not alone. There will be ups and downs, successes and challenges, and I want you to know that you are surrounded by a team of dedicated professionals who are here to support you every step of the way.
