Cancer: How to cope

With the improvement of medical science and technology, many cancers can be treated. In order to have the best shot at defeating cancer, here are some ideas to reduce stress and provide mental resilience in your battle against the disease.

Take it one day at a time

Try to put worries about the future aside. Coping with cancer is less overwhelming when you break it up into “day bites”. This also allows you to focus on getting the most out of each day in spite of your illness. Learn to channel your time and efforts on things that you can control and let go of what you cannot.

Say: “No!”

Undergoing treatment for cancer will take its toll on your physical and emotional state. Learn to recognise your limitations and politely decline doing things that you might not have the time or energy to complete. For example, if you are continuing at your day job whilst undergoing therapy, inform your superiors and peers about your condition so you can prune your workload to make it more manageable. In other cases, if you prefer to be alone during treatment or on your rest day, let your friends and family know so that they can give you the space you need.

Review your goals and priorities

Determine what is truly important in your life, and make time for those things that matter. Keep in mind your physical limitations when it comes to strenuous activities so that you don’t overexert yourself.


Relaxation rejuvenates the body, mind, and spirit. Different forms of relaxation will appeal to different people; find out what appeals to you – whether it’s reading a book, spending time with friends and family, or meditating in your religion – and set aside time for it daily. The benefits of relaxation will go a long way in your recovery.

Be open to help

Recognising that you need help and allowing people to aid you is a sure way to relieve the stresses of cancer treatment.
